Reproductions

These are unique, utilitarian works of art.  Each, one of a kind item, is the culmination of years of studying hundreds of original examples.   Many of these pieces are composites of original design elements and techniques.  I try to capture the essence and nature of the culture in each piece I produce.   All work is done on brain tanned deer, elk, or moose hide.  All sewing is done with natural sinew or linen as were the originals.   I believe that quality work is possible only if the highest quality of materials are used.  Unless specified, all edging is done using one or several quilled edging techniques, unless a beaded edging is requested.  Exact reproductions of museum pieces are also possible.

These reproductions are created with attention not only to the authenticity of design and technique, but also with an attempt to convey the beauty of the Native cultures of the 18th  and early 19th centuries.  These pieces are made with the intent of satisfying the needs of living historians, collectors, museums (such as period displays and interpretors), and supplying props and wardrobe for films.

Other items include roach spreaders, and combs made of moose antler, as were the originals.  These pieces are based on artifacts which were recovered archaeologically.

Porcupine Quillwork is a nearly lost art-form which was practiced by most of the American Indians in the northern half of North America.

In the Great Lakes Region, quillwork was practiced until about the 1830's.  It gradually faded, being replaced as glass beads became obtainable from traders.   Within twenty years, it had essentially become extinct in the region.  Today, a very small number of devoted craftsmen have revived the artform.
