Coxing help for 1st yr cox?

I’m a coxswain in NZ and i’m having issues with figuring out what to say. Atm, i just sit and steer and my coach controls pretty much everything. I just need some pointers/commands to talk about in the boat. (Btw, we’re working on catches, body position, bladework & finishes, but i just need general stuff to talk about).

pick out some key words from the coach’s terminology .
Always talk in the rhythm of he stroke .ie “power on the legs” as the rowers drive the legs down , “sitting tall” “arm draw” , calls for rate changes on pieces must be called a few strokes to go
eg 10 on in 3 strokes , 2 … 1 .. this time …now (call as the rowers are sliding so you call just before the catch
Ask around the clubs for advise on coxing , there are even some manuals out there ( check internet ) I know there is one on the Australian rowing website , and there are sure to be others
Better to say less , than more and NEVER count the strokes out loud unless your rowers want you too , it is SO>>>> annoying , just count a few here and there …
Remember , what you say and how you steer and control your crew in every way , can win or lose your races . you are the boss remember , the boats captain and our crew is the engine . Don’t let your rowers let you think otherwise.
Enjoy and always keep to your minimum weight so you give your crew the best possible advantage .
good luck
