What is the minimum power required for a boat to be able to fly?
I want to build an aluminum boat planing for three occupants, length of about 5 to 6 meters, with a light and weak, but fully enclosed cabin aluminum. It's supposed to be a commuter boat for use on the Port of Otago in southern New Zealand. I want to be able to plane, but the speed limit is 25 knots – which I hope to achieve, give or take about 8 knots. I like the idea of using an outboard Yanmar Diesel. They come with a maximum of 39 horsepower. I need at this point? Thank you.
I would say you have a hope in hell. For a boat of this size and this would be the min I would say 90hp if your Goping in swell or rough CONDIST etc. then a min of 115, which is noted for the boat will give you an idea.
