Pirate Radio – Get Ready To Jam!
Pirate Radio is a journey into the past. Great songs from the early days of rock'n'roll. The antics a group of DJs stuck in Northern Mer will leave you laughing. And the clothes? These characters festooned opened the way for a great adventure.
Richard Curtis is coupled Director and screenwriter for this movie nostalgic comedy. Not only does it give us extravagant characters, the subtle hand is felt throughout the film, with some memorable scenes. You may remember some of his other creations, Love, Actually (2003) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004). Both are certain of my favorites and display his talent and his sense of whimsy. The film was released in Europe "The Boat That Rocked" and we get the version short, Pirate Radio.
The story is really based on facts dating from the early rock. The BBC aired two hours of rock'n'roll one days in the early 60s, and pirated radio like Radio Caroline, anchored in the North Sea shot rock twenty-four hours a day. The British teenagers really liked and broadcasters have become rich. Needless to say that the government was not happy with and that creates conflict for this story.
The scenario is evolving with a group of ego leads DJs and fun filled days of broadcasting through Rock seas. This group is led by Quentin (Bill Nighy), the station manager. You may remember Bill's memorable performance in Love Actually, as the aging star rock, seeking a return at any price ", great stuff. Quentin calls his teenage nephew, Carl (Tom Sturridge) to stay on the boat at the suggestion of his mother. The rest is history and his coming of age to learn about the DJ's and is the glue that binds the story together. The vintage rock'n'roll really gives an excellent basis for the film and you've pumped the fight. Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) DJ is the most popular and the rules of the boat. It lasts only until the return of former king pirate radio. Gavin (Rhys Ifans) is the king polling and an ego driven feud erupts between the Count and Gavin. You will love the scene where they face off and they climb the mast of the ship. I dizziness throughout the scene, and the final scene was a memorable ending the dispute.
The government bureaucrat stuck Sir Alistair Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) is meanwhile doing everything in his power to stop Pirate Radio. Kenneth did a great job describing myopic, anal, stick in the mud. It is a pleasure to see someone take a role with such relish. The rest of the film is powered by sex, drugs and rock n roll. Capers capers on abound in the rest of the film. Carl, meanwhile, takes it all in and fall in love. You can applaud the dramatic rescue scene, as DJs are driven off the sinking ship.
Sprinkled throughout the pirate radio are cameos by, January Jones, Emma Thompson, and Talulah Riley. The rest of the supporting troops did a great job of adding depth to their characters to life. Philip Seymour Hoffman has done a credible job as leader of this merry band of misfits. It was nice to see him take comic roles, and stretch yourself. Rhys Ifans is a wonderful turn as the peacock strutting, Gavin, it was a pleasure to watch him work. You may remember his hilarious interpretation of flat mate addled Hugh Grant in Notting Hill.
Pirate Radio is a film that will leave you smiling. Rock music is the engine of the film and have you bouncing in your seat. Take a friend or your lover and enjoy this nostalgic romp.
